Capoeira is a unique blend of fight and dance, song and music. Today it is Brazil’s second largest sport after soccer, and is fast becoming a globally recognized art and sport form.
The game or “Jogo de Capoeira” is best described as a circle (called a “roda”) in which two players (capoeiristas) display their techniques in a whirlwind of power, speed and agility. They are guided by the music, singing and clapping of the people in the roda. There is an acrobatic and beautiful avoidance of physical contact. The players’ movements display ritual, trickery and grace. Songs rich with oral traditions are sung to reference what is occurring at that very moment in the game. This gathering of musicians and artists forms a community of expression.
Aú Capoeira School is one of the most important and recognised schools of Capoeira in Southern Brazil and has been developing its activities for more than 28 years. Professor Junior introduced the Aú Capoeira School to New Zealanders in July 2004 with the intention of trading information and supporting all people or groups of people with some interest in the art of Capoeira.
We believe that we need to value the human being in all aspects; physically, morally, spiritually and racially. Our vision is that all expressions of Capoeira have a need to be recognized and supported, respecting each limitation and different points of view. We intend to bring the natural talent that resides within each one of our students to realisation, and improve that talent within Capoeira basics and principles.
Aú Capoeira School knows that it has a large responsibility to pass on the inherintance of a people that fought to attain their freedom, and we will preserve this cultural treasure.
