All Star Cheerleaders Hamilton

~ Where all our cheerleaders are stars ~

American styled cheerleading is here as a new sport in Hamilton! We just started two terms ago, and so far our teams have double in size already! Cheerleading combines elements of dance and gymnastics. It requires coordination, strength & balance and is very different to the professional cheerleading one might see at a Chiefs or Mooloo rugby game. At the moment, we have opportunities to compete at 3-5 competitions per year in New Zealand, and then Australia and USA competitions to access for the Elite teams. Other opportunities for the display aspect of the sport also arise. You may have seen All Star Cheerleading on the television programme “New Zealand’s Got Talent” where they reached the semi-finals where they excited the judges and TV studio crowds.  One of our coaches, Lauren was part of the squad.

Cheerleading is a fun alternative sport from which you learn physical skills, AND also the concept of working together with peers, trusting others to be there for them, and aiming to get to the next skill level in a safety conscious environment. So come join in on the fun! It doesn’t matter that you have never done it before because we will teach you how! A large majority of our new members are pretty much “in the same boat” as we introduce this exciting, vibrant and vivacious sport to Hamilton.

At All Star Cheerleaders we are about breaking the stereotype for cheerleading, and opening the fantastic sport up to everyone so they can be part of this amazing wave currently going through New Zealand. We are passionate about cheerleading and its positive impact on young lives. No one is excluded from participation by gender, shape, size or ability. Everyone is welcome and we have a special place for everyone in our teams.

Schools can have teams that compete in the National and International Cheerleading competitions. You will also find that a school cheer team will also add an additional fun and wow factor to your sports/ school events. If your school is interested in having a team and can get a group of at least 15-20 students together, please contact Debi so we can schedule your school into our cheerleading class timetable

Understanding and marveling at the workings of the human body, Debi Jakes finds her physiotherapy background a great asset to coaching American-style cheerleading. She runs it with her talented daughter, Lauren who at just 15 years of age has competed for New Zealand in this sport at the recent first International Cheer Union World Cup in Florida, USA in April 2009 as the sport was assessed for criteria to become an Olympic sport! The New Zealand Team came home with 2 BRONZE MEDALS!! The members of the New Zealand Representative Cheerleading teams are athletes in top physical condition they stunt, tumble, jump, cheer and dance their high energy routines are both physically and mentally demanding.
