Made especially for the road, it has the classic curly handlebars and very thin tyres; it will take you further because it is faster and lighter than a mountain bicycle.
Make sure you go an expert to get fitted for your bike, they will give you personal advice on what to buy and what will fit you properly.
If you are a beginner the shop will probably select your pedals for you, and it may be best just to get flat pedals. If you have “clipless pedals” (they are actually pedals where your shoe clicks in and out of the pedal) you will need special cycle shoes and the dealer should know the range of shoes that are compatible with the pedals
