What are Super-foods?

It’s hard to ignore the hype about Super-foods. It’s a term dreamed up by clever marketers to help sell the latest food fad.

There’s always a new Super-food in the media, first it was blueberries, then goji berries, pomegranates and acai.

Now we have chia seeds and wild blue algae. Some of the health claims being touted are ridiculous and many Super-foods are expensive and not grown locally.

All whole foods, especially fruits and vegetables are packed full of beneficial antioxidants and vitamins.

An individual food whether it’s labelled ‘super’ or not, will not help you lose weight, increase your energy or prevent disease.

A healthy diet depends on a variety of foods eaten over the week, not on one particular so-called Super-food.

Instead of searching for Super-foods, eat a balanced unprocessed diet and find out how many calories you should be eating each day.

Make sure your dinner plate is brimming with vegetables, eat an apple every day and add a salad to lunch, that’s a great start to a super healthy day.
